Common Name: Black Faced Grassquit
Scientific Name: Tiaris bicolor
Description: 4.5 inches; Males: heads, breast and underparts black; upperparts olive green; Females and Juveniles: upperparts olive gray; underparts grayish.
Habitat: A common resident; a small seed eater which can be found island wide in grass fields, sugar cane fields etc.

Common Name: Black Whiskered Vireo
Scientific Name: Vireo altiloquus
Description: 5-6.5 inches; a small passerine bird; upperparts olive green; eyebrow strip whitish; eye-line brownish black; black line on the side of the neck (whisker) underparts whitish with a yellowish green flanks; Juveniles brown eyes; Adults Reddish brown eyes.
Habitat: Island wide; can be found, our heard, in wooded areas, gullies, orchards, forest etc;

Bird #34: Solitary Sandpiper




Common Name: Solitary Sandpiper
Scientific Name: Tringa solitaria    
Description: 7.5-9 inches; white eye-ring; upperparts dark olive green- brown with white spots; black bar on the tail feathers; underparts white;
Habitat: mud flaps, pot holes, ponds, swamps etc.
The Solitary Sandpiper is a bird with a different. Unlike other sandpipers that migrates in flocks this sandpiper migrates alone thus its name. It also nests in trees while most sandpipers nest on the ground.

Description: 10.5-11.5 inches; medium size shorebird, long straight bill; head brown and buff stripe pattern; dark eye strip; upperparts mottled brown and black, reddish-brown tail; underparts whitish; legs yellowish-green legs.
Habitat: grass water edges of ponds and swamps; mud flaps etc; uses camouflage very well.
